College professor turned gospel artist/songwriter (SESAC), Dr. Sheila L. Johnson, has recently released her new single “Freedom,” which debuted #9 on the Billboard Hot Singles Sales Chart. Her previous singles, “First Day of the Week” and “Jesus The Problem Solver,” both received national airplay and were featured on her release “Move With God.” (available at www.cd.baby.com/drsheilaj2; Amazon.com; iTunes.com)“Freedom” is her 8th recording. The Hampton Ministers Conference Choir and Organist Guild selected Dr. Johnson’s arrangement of “Little David Play on Your Harp” to include in its music packet in 2016. In addition, her song, “Jesus The Problem Solver” was selected from over 600 song submissions to be included in the Gospel Music Workshop of America (GMWA) 2013 Mass Choir Songbook, featured on the 2013 GMWA (Gospel Music Workshop of America) Mass Choir Recording and presented at the 2013 National Baptist Convention USA Inc. Annual Session. Her gift of songwriting, arranging and singing is apparent to all in this recording. The choir vocals are impeccable and the band does not hold anything back in their playing. No wonder many walk away after hearing “First Day of the Week” feeling that no matter how bad thing may be, (stones in our life figuratively speaking), Jesus can and will roll the stones away. Dr. Sheila’s compositions and arrangements in “Move With God,” include diverse gospel genres such as Urban gospel, gospel rap, praise and worship, Pentecostal praise, Latin, Negro Spiritual Jazz/gospel fusion and down home gospel to name a few. No wonder it is said, “Dr. Johnson’s music meets your diverse musical taste.” Dr. Johnson is not a new comer to gospel music. Dr. Johnson is not a stranger to gospel music.
